Event Description:
The United Way of Greater Los Angeles invited us to participate in the 7th Annual Fall into Literacy Book Festival on Saturday, September 16 at The Banning Museum in Wilmington, CA. The festival attracted hundreds of people and children of all ages.
This year’s theme, Viva Los Libros, is designed to fuel every child’s love for reading and writing. The festival will feature live entertainment, book signings, reading nooks, story time, meet and greets with authors, a resource fair, and many fun activities for the whole family. There were reading nooks, a variety of public library services including the Little Free Library, LAUSD, the LA County Library, and the bookmobile.
Wilmington, an historically underserved community, is nestled between Torrance and Long Beach in L.A. County’s South Bay. United Way of Greater Los Angeles has been able to make a collective impact in the community by creating a fun and inviting space for grade-level reading and by giving away more than 7,000 books in the last year alone.
The festival also featured a resource fair with over 70 exhibitors connecting families to basic needs services in education, health care, and financial stability. For more information, visit https://www.wilmingtonbookfestival.com/.
The troopers were a huge hit! Everyone did a wonderful job interacting with families and kiddos, and there were often lines to get photos and say hi. We had several young ones come back to see us several times throughout the event. (This is definitely an event where wranglers are necessary.) This is a busy event with a large number of both attendees and vendors!
